The ultimate guide on how to keep your dog entertained during lockdown

Dog inside website
Due to the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic many dogs will find their daily routine has been completely changed with their owners now being at home instead of work.

Whilst this is a difficult time for everybody, it is important to find some positivity and use the time to do things you do not usually have time for.  This can include spending more time with your pets, especially as they are likely to be kept inside for longer periods of time.

Your dog is likely to be very pleased to have you around more often but apart from the one hour walk a day, it may be useful to find some other ways to entertain your dog to avoid them getting up to mischief indoors.

There are many different games to keep your dogs entertained, help with mental stimulation and their problem-solving skills.

Search games:  Creating a scavenger hunt with treats or toys around the house is a great way to get your dog using their senses with rewards once they find the hiding spots.

Shell game:  Place three plastic cups upside-down hiding a treat under one of them, move the cups around whilst your dog is watching, then see if they can find the reward.

Tidy up: A win- win situation, train your dog to put toys away which will keep them entertained whilst helping you keep the house tidy.

Treats: Make your dog’s treats last longer by creating some frozen treats. You can do this by putting some food or a treat into an ice cream container, fill with water and freeze it.  Your pet will have fun waiting for the ice to melt with a surprise to enjoy at the end. Another way to keep your dog busy is with a Kong where you can place the treats inside.

Training: How well does your dog know the important command such as “sit”, “stay”?  This time is a great opportunity to brush up on your dog’s training.

Get creative:  Why not get involved too? You could also get your kids involved - two in one! Keep everyone entertained by baking dog friendly treats, making some new toys and games. You could even make an obstacle course for your dog and children, tiring them all out at once!

Tip: Make a new tug toy for your dog by braiding some old t-shirts.

Unless you are self-isolating, you are allowed out once a day, and it is important to still get out with your dog -  whilst keeping your distance from other people and keeping your dog on a lead in areas with other people. This will give you both that much-needed change of scenery and mental stimulation.

With 12 million pet owners in the UK (44% of the population), the current situation is a perfect time to give your dog some extra attention. They are great company and can help with anxiety and stress so why not make the most of them!
